April 16, 1912. As the early morning fog clears, Harriet Quimby takes off from a field near Dover Castle on her attempt to be the first woman to fly across the English Channel. She succeeded and landed on a sandy beach at Hardelot, France, just south of Calais. Quimby was the first licensed woman pilot in the U.S.A., but her career was tragically cut short when she was killed during a sight-seeing flight at the Harvard-Boston Aviation Exhibition.
