The Whistling Birdcage - by John Greaves

Here is an early morning view of Supermarine Stranraer of No.5 (BR) Squadron - Dartmouth, Nova Scotia - 1942. Called the "whistling bird cage" because of her look and the sound of the wind through her many brace wires, the Supermarine Stranraer was the last of the biplane flying boats designed by R.J. Mitchell, the man who designed the Spitfire. The Stranraer was used in RCAF service on anti-sub patrol until replaced by Canso and Catalina aircraft mid-war. The last Stranraer left RCAF service in 1946 and one (No.920) survived in commercial service on Canada's west coast until 1958, later to go to the RAF museum in Hendon.
