CENTENNIAL

NEWS RELEASE COMMUNIQUÉ
May 20, 2009
AVIATION ARTIST WINS TOP PRIZE IN CENTENNIAL OF FLIGHT CONTEST
OTTAWA – Glen Urquhart of Kincardine, ON.
was announced the winner of the Centennial of Flight Military Aviation
Art Contest today claiming $3,500 in prize money for his winning artwork,
titled ‘Solo’.
The painting was selected from among 18 entries submitted by artists
from across Canada or by members of the Canadian Aviation Artists
Association (CAAA) residing anywhere in the world. ‘Solo’
depicts an image of a Sopwith Camel of the First World War era surrounded
by ground and aircrew as she is being prepared for another mission.
“‘Solo’ best personifies the human element of aviation
history in Canada,” commented Brig.-Gen. Gaston Cloutier, Air
Force Centennial of Flight Project Manager. “This painting truly
captures the hardship and the passion of the people behind the machine
and why aviation was so powerful and so greatly esteemed in the accomplishment
of many military feats.”
Original works of the top three entries will become property of the
Department of National Defence and will become the first collection
in a series of aviation art that will be displayed by the Chief of
the Air Staff here in the National Defence Headquarters.
“The winning entry represents the first piece in the new Air
Force Aviation Art Program,” said Lt.-Gen. Angus Watt, Chief
of the Air Staff. “As such, I am very proud to announce the
first winner in a program which will promote the Air Force, its people
and its capabilities through art.”
The second and third place winners respectively from among the entries
are Capt. Maciej Hatta, a Canadian Forces pilot currently serving
at 15 Wing Moose Jaw, SK., for ‘Breaking through the Years’
and Don Connolly of Sydenham, ON. for ‘Spring Approach’.
The Centennial of Flight Military Aviation Art Contest partnered with
CAAA to offer a unique opportunity for aviation artists to partake
in acknowledging 100 years of powered flight in Canada that is being
recognized throughout 2009. All contest entries are on display in
an online art gallery for all Canadians to view and to appreciate
the proud military aviation heritage we share.
“The Canadian Aviation Artists Association is proud to have
been able assist Canada’s Air Force in organizing its Centennial
of Flight Military Aviation Art Contest,” stated Mr. George
Pendlebury, CAAA President. “This collection of artwork will
help to document and communicate the significant contribution that
the Air Force has made to our aviation heritage in the first century
of flight in our country, as well as our contribution to developments
in global aviation."
The winning entry was chosen for its originality in personifying a
particular event, aircraft, battle, or significant milestone in Canadian
military aviation history. Although produced originally on canvas,
entries were submitted digitally for ease in acquiring the artwork
for judging. A judge’s panel comprising of members of the Air
Force and a representation of CAAA was chosen by Brig.-Gen. Cloutier,
Chair of the Centennial of Flight Military Aviation Art Contest.
The prize money was generously donated by the Silver Dart Centennial
Association who partnered with the Air Force Centennial of Flight
Project Office in the pursuit of creative interpretations of this
nationally historic event, which originated in Baddeck, NS. Prize
money was awarded in the amounts of $3,500, $2,000 and $1,000 respectively.
