CAHS-CAAA Cross-Promotion Opportunities
Danielle Metcalfe-Chenail, on the Board of Directors and immediate Past-President of the Canadian Aviation Historical Society (CAHS) has proposed some promotional opportunities for CAAA members:
In 2011, we had a great partnership with several members of the CAAA, where I put together a PowerPoint to highlight artists at our convention in Edmonton, and we included contact info, artwork names and prices. We're interested in doing something similar for this year's 50th anniversary convention in Ottawa, September 11-15. We may also have space for physical artwork if some of the local artists were interested in being involved.
Also, to help raise money for the Society, we've decided to put together calendars and greeting cards to sell at our convention. Several artists, like Jim Bruce, have already committed to providing high res digital images of some of their work for our use, in exchange for a couple of free calendars and cards, and promotion through out website (www.cahs.ca), e-newsletter, and social media accounts. We'd create pages on our website to highlight the artists involved with a Q&A, photo, links, and representative artworks. We're looking at putting in the order by June 1 at the latest, so would like to have commitments and artwork in hand as soon as possible.
We'll also be on the lookout for donations of door prizes or auction items for the conference (for which we could likely provide charitable receipts).
Hope the CAAA and its members will be game for some of these cross-promotional initiatives!
Danielle Metcalfe-Chenail

Annual Conference in Sidney, BC
Eight members from BC and Ontario met at the BC Aviation Museum (BCAM) at Sidney, BC for the 2012 CAAA Conference. BCAM responded enthusiastically to our proposed conference and suggested we hold it during their annual Open House on the August long weekend to maximize public exposure to our art show. Conference highlights included:
- Tour of Viking Air, Ltd to see the construction of new-build Twin Otter 400 aircraft;
- A visit with 443 Maritime Helicopter Squadron where we were treated to an excellent briefing on the Squadron and its Sea King aircraft and then a walk-around of a Sea King. We watched a Sea King crew perform a pre-flight inspection, followed by a start, taxi and take-off and then returned to the static display to see technicians at work doing minor repairs;
- Don Connolly presented a very persuasive talk on the merits of accepting commissions and then described commissions he has performed accompanied by slides;
- A tour of the DeHavilland Mosquito aircraft that is being restored as `F` for Freddie by Victoria Air Maintenance;
- A wide-ranging round table discussion on promoting CAAA and our goals and plans for the coming year;
- A guided tour of the Emily Carr exhibit `On The Edge of Nowhere` at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria;
- Our art show at the BCAM Open House had 28 pieces and we distributed some of our new `Rack Cards`;
In an unprecedented occurrence, we had a potential new member turn up at the art show with two watercolours tucked under one arm. He had never heard of CAAA (something we`re working to rectify), but had heard from the museum that there was to be an aviation art display that day. Needless to say he was recruited immediately! Martin Myers sold one of his watercolours and we received a lot of positive attention from the passing crowd.
At the AGM there were no changes in the executive this year, but President Eric Mitchell agreed to take over as both Webmaster and as Government and Commercial Relations Coordinator, positions he is hoping to pass on to someone else by the end of next year. It was also decided to plan to hold next year`s meeting at the Shearwater Aviation Museum in conjunction with the Sea King 50th Anniversary.
